Artful Readers Club - Purple

My book this month is Purple by Graham J Sharpe this is a fantasy novel set in modern day London originally intended as young adult fiction. It was an impulse buy off Amazon and I had to suspend belief to get started really but was attracted by some lovely descriptions.
In the story a purple mist has descended on the world and all the people aged between 18 and 65 have vanished. The under 18 and the oldies are left to run London. The oldies have been left pain free by the mist and they and the young people work together. The young assume responsibilities that previously would have been considered beyond them and everyone pulls together. Greed was only evident in one or two, unfortunately they made themselves leaders. The tale follows follows four youngsters who meet and try to unravel the mystery of the purple and find their parents.
There is a lot of food for thought in this vision of a less selfish society and it highlights the underestimation of the capabilities of both the younger and older members of society. It is a quick read and despite my incredulity at the plot and the coincidences, seems the energies where responsible for those,I enjoyed the read. I found myself smiling a lot while reading!
The young people are brought together by the finding of a purple rose so that is my art work for this month. I have actually drawn this rose not stamped or traced. I was tempted. This is a big first for me having found the courage to try to draw by reading The Creative License by Danny Gregory. A very inspirational book.
Here's my purple rose.

Do check out the other book reviews and artwork at Darcy's blog here.

  1. Well done, Jen, on your lovely drawing and colouring of the purple rose! Cannot go back now!
The story sounds an interesting one and I particularly like the bit where the purple mist removes pain from the oldies! Could do with a spot of that at the moment.

  3. Your purple rose rocks!!! Really, you can draw anything now! ♥
I'm a little scared of the purple mist now, where would I have ended, being over 18 and not 65 for a long time... Might have read the book to find out, right? :)

  4. Gorgeous rose Jen...it seems the "possibilities" managed by the characters in your book rubbed off on you...stretching you to try something you previously thought beyond your reach :D XXX

  6. That is one beautiful rose, so skilfully drawn and shaded. You clearly have more drawing talent than you thought.
Enjoyed the review and the fact that us oldies were left to run things with the youngsters! I surprise myself by thinking I will go look for this on Amazon and reading it. I look forward to next month's artwork. I'll also look for The Creative License.

  7. I was impressed by the concept behind this book. It speaks to our society today, where the young are ignored and the elderly are pushed aside. Very thought provoking review.

If I could draw as well as you, I'd call myself an artist. You ARE one!

  8. I just read your thoughtful comment on my April book I reviewed. I borrowed the book from a friend and have already returned it, or I would certainly consider altering it. I just hope my friend doesn't decide to make something in the book for ME!!

  10. The rose is stunning Jen - and I love the review...the premise behind the story really intrigues me....I think it's a sad reflection on society today that us oldies are dismissed as being "past it"and youngsters only ever appear in the media in a negative way. I may well search out this book. Thank you!

  13. Food and purple, I would eat it all up. I'm not sure why, your purple rose makes me think of William Blake...

  14. Your purple rose is lovely! Hopefully this has given you the taste for drawing your own material and now you won't look back! :) Major kudos for not even tracing - I must admit I do a lot of tracing! This book sounds really good - although sadly I am in the age group that would have disappeared :)

  15. Being in the 'older' age group and having a grandaughter who fits into the 'younger' category this book has a certain appeal to me. ;-) Well done on taking the plunge and drawing your purple rose, it looks really pretty.

  16. What a lovely texture on that rose! The book sounds quite unusual. There is a lot of really interesting fiction for young adults - much of it more thought-provoking that adult fiction.xxx
