Artful Readers Club - The Last train Home by Tony Wilson

I read and enjoyed this book as I sped along on the train to Scotland. The story is set on Christmas Eve and explores the lives and personalities of three very different men. Mysteriously they are all on the same, last train home with an unknown but clearly magical person. We hear about episodes in their lives and through the mists of time the stranger shows them various events that might or might not have happened. They are shocked and surprised at the ripple effect of their actions and this is the moral of the story. Seemingly small decisions we make can have a big effect on our lives and that of others with whom we are linked.
The ending is a bit Hollywood, there may even be a film with a not dissimilar theme, but I was so engaged with the characters I was happy with that and smiling as I read the last chapter.
My art work is a journal page again using silhouettes! Inspired by the description of the train stuck in the snow in the story.
Looking forward to reading all the other reviews and seeing the wonderful art work for this month, see it on Darcy's blog here    Jen x

  1. Wow! Sounds like a smashing story. I like the big black train thundering through the lives of the three men in the snowy and icy landscape. Scary to realize that seemingly innocuous events and choices have the potential to change everything. Love the powerful journal page - Mind The Train!

Could any small choice really make such a difference? Guess I will always wonder.... :-)

  7. I enjoyed reading your review. It was quite well done and condensed with perfection. Your art is stunning. I am so intrigued by the silhouettes. I loved them. The train is so well done, as well as the men, too.

  8. It sounds like a great book to read...meeting people and the choices that are made can create great drama especially when magic is involved. I LOVE the silhouetted artwork! It is reminiscent of "fantasy/surrealist" artist I recently learned: Giorgio de Chirico.

  9. This sounds like a good read! How often I've sat on a train and wondered about the lives of my fellow passengers! Your art work goes so well with the review too. I like the use of silhouettes, as it really adds to the sense of mystery. Your journal page would make a better cover for the book than the original one they used! Julie Ann xx

  11. Sounds like an interesting book, and how strange to be reading it on a train when the story is set on a train. Your artwork is very effective with the silhouettes and the sparse landscape. It gives the feeling of coldness. A lovely piece.
